Optical and X-Ray Diffraction Analyses of Shock Metamorphosed Knox Group Dolostone from Wells Creek Crater, Tennessee

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Geological Sciences (Arts and Sciences).
Shock waves released by hypervelocity impact have been shown to decrease in strength exponentially with distance from the point of impact. However, how shock met- amorphic effects in minerals in central uplifts of complex impact structures vary with depth has not been fully delineated. The incomplete delineation of these effects is even more prominent in carbonate minerals due to the smaller body of research on shock met- amorphism in carbonates. In this study, thin sections and powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of 7 core fragment samples from 8 m to 401 m depth in the Knox Group dolostone megabrec- cia of the central uplift of the Wells Creek impact structure were analyzed for shock met- amorphic fabrics. These samples were analyzed petrographically for the number of twins, cleavage planes, cleavage sets, and fractures per cm2, and via Rietveld structure refinement for full width at half maximum (FWHM) values. No twinning was observed in any sample. Fractures per cm2 were observed to decrease exponentially with depth. Cleavage sets and planes per cm2 and FWHM values were not observed to systematically change with depth. These observations provide limited evidence of shock attenuation with depth in the central uplift of the Wells Creek impact structure and may indicate local re-equilibration of the dolomite crystal lattice following the impact event.
