Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Ohio University, English (Arts and Sciences).
The dissertation is divided into two sections: an essay titled “The Poetry of Simultaneous Perspectives: Split Screen, Superimposition, and Multiple Narratives” and a poetry collection titled Bitterroot. “The Poetry of Simultaneous Perspectives: Split Screen, Superimposition, and Multiple Narratives” examines a set of poems in which two or more planes of perspective are operative at once. These poems fuse images and/or narratives to create a new hybrid perspective, one previously unavailable to poet and reader, and one which is integral to understanding the complex and multifaceted nature of the poem’s subject matter. The essay analyzes salient examples of this technique and its effects in poems by Thomas Hardy, Walt Whitman, Cornelius Eady, and Kevin Prufer. Bitterroot is a collection of poetry that explores notions of family, identity, masculinity, place, and the American West.
