Quotational Transparency

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, Philosophy (Arts and Sciences).
I observe that in some contexts quotation marks are transparent. I propose that this quotational transparency reveals that a close semantic relation holds between the meaning of a quotation and the meaning of its quoted expression. The Proper Name theory of quotation and Recanati’s Use theory of quotation deny that such a close semantic relation holds. In the course of this paper, I identify the tenets of these views which contradict my position on quotational transparency and present arguments that these tenets are false.
