Abstract
Wireless communication in the modern world is facing various challenges like limited bandwidth available or the requirement of more power to transmit signals. MIMO technology is evolving that helps to improve wireless communications by using multiple antennas at the transmitter side and at the receiver side to exploit diversity and multipath effects and improve the quality of the received signal while using the same bandwidth available for a SISO system and using the same amount of transmit power to transmit more data. Alamouti STBC is used to exploit diversity at the transmitter of a MIMO system. This thesis simulates a 2x2 MIMO system using Alamouti STBC. The focus is on improving the BER performance of a 2x2 MIMO under different fading channel conditions. A Nakagami-m fading channel is simulated and the value of the fade parameter `m’ is varied in order to model the extent of fading in the channel. It is shown that the BER performance is improved (as expected) by increasing the number of antennas used at the transmitter and receiver and also by increasing the value of `m’ which indicates a reduction in the extent of fading.
