Abstract
Bullying and victimization are major problems in adolescence (see Troop-Gordon, 2017, for a review). Accordingly, several universal-based intervention programs have been developed. However, evidence for the efficacy of these programs is mixed. One reason for this may be that there is considerable heterogeneity among youth involved in bullying (i.e., involved youth may be bullies, bully-victims, or victims). As such, researchers have argued that these youth may be best served by targeted approaches that address their disparate needs (e.g., Farrell & Vulin-Reynolds, 2007). However, in order to understand how to best meet the needs of these youth, an understanding of the factors that may place youth at risk for, and protect them from, involvement in bullying is necessary. The goal of the present study was to examine risk and protective factors for different patterns of bullying involvement. Support for a three-class solution (i.e., uninvolved, bully-victim, and predominant victim) was found. Emotion dysregulation and beliefs in support of aggression were associated with bully-victim status, whereas internalizing problems were associated with predominant victim status. Willingness to seek help (i.e., greater trust in staff and peers to manage bullying effectively) buffered risk for bully-victim status, and moderated the relation between emotion dysregulation and membership in this group. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
