Abstract
Currently, the Ohio University Edwards Accelerator Laboratory primarily uses the swinger beamline and time-of-flight tunnel facility for neutron measurements. Planned neutron transmission and scattering measurements cannot be successfully undertaken at the swinger beamline due to the presence of a large concrete wall at the tunnel entrance which constrains the available source-to-sample distance. A new reaction-based collimated neutron source has been constructed to allow for sample placement to be located at any distance ≥ 0.5 m. A detailed review of the Fixed Angle Short Trajectory (FAST) neutron source assembly is given, including shielding and collimation design and available target chambers. A complete modeling of the neutron source has been performed using the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport (MCNP) code. The implemented capabilities of MCNP pertaining to this work are demonstrated by the execution of a transmission simulation test problem. Energy distribution results for En = 14 and En = 4 MeV incident neutrons were taken at multiple detector locations and a radial distribution was compiled for later experimental comparison. Final results from multiple iterations of MCNP simulations characterize the efficacy of the shielding and collimation design specifications.
