Asian American Racism during the COVID-19 Pandemic: How Asian American Journalists have been Impacted

This thesis examines the Asian American journalist experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was conducted in which Asian American journalists (n=100) partake in a survey and then a smaller sample (n=12) partake in an interview about their experience as both a journalist and an Asian American. Results show that participants felt their career had been negatively impacted by coronavirus due to job losses, pay-cuts, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, and their race/ethnicity. As for their personal lives, results showed that respondents feel they have faced discrimination, harassment, and violent attacks that are related to the poor rhetoric used by both the mainstream media and government when it came to addressing COVID- 19. Results also seemed to reveal that certain Asian Americans were impacted by these factors more than others. Journalists who identified as Indian faced less backlash and harassment.
