Studies in the political economy of local government

Holian, Matthew John

Abstract Details

2008, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Economics.
This dissertation explores topics related to the scope, structure and performance of local government, how the performance of government influences citizen satisfaction, and how citizen satisfaction influences political behavior such as voting. Using both formal (mathematical) theory and empirical analysis, three essays explore: outsourcing in U.S. cities with an application to emergency ambulance service and elderly voter interest groups, optimal decentralization in the context of both corporations and federal systems of government, and citizen evaluations of government performance as a determinant of voting turnout. The studies employ a methodological approach, which is interdisciplinary (with particular emphasis on integrating ideas from organizational and public economics), and applied theoretic.
