Environmental Analysis of Full Depth Reclamation Using Coal Combustion By-Products

This study combines field monitoring and laboratory experiments to track the environmental impact of using coal combustion by-products (CCPs) in the full depth reclamation (FDR) of damaged roads. The monitoring consisted of two road segments located in Delaware and Warren Counties. There were a total of 8 test sections between the sites, and each section had a lysimeter installed to obtain pore water samples. In the laboratory, microwave acid digestion and leaching tests were done on each of the test section road materials. The leaching tests that were completed were the TCLP protocol and SPLP protocol. The results of the environmental monitoring show that values for the pore water consistently result in lower concentrations than the US EPA sets for drinking water maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). The laboratory leaching tests result in concentrations of As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Se that are below the Ohio EPA non-toxic criteria.
