Formant narrowing using linear predictive coding to improve phonetic perception in children

Previous research has shown that children listen to speech sounds differently than adults. Understanding how speech is perceived, organized, and processed by the auditory system is important in explaining this difference and can be utilized in better assisting children with hearing loss. Several experiments were conducted that motivated the development of an algorithm to narrow the formants of speech. Children were found to rely on a coherent speech signal more than adults. This is based on consistent results in which children were more negatively impacted by an absence of certain formant information useful in forming a coherent speech percept. It was found in certain conditions of masking noise that focusing the formant information was beneficial for all age groups labeling speech sounds. Therefore it was decided to use linear predictive coding to analyze, process, and re-synthesize human speech signals for an experiment to test if formant narrowing is a valid method to enhance the formant information of speech.
