Leary, Prior R.

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, East Asian Languages and Literatures.
In this thesis, I analyze Sino-North Korean relations from the establishment of formal relations in 1949 until the present. Special emphasis is given to the influence of the North Korean nuclear problem on Sino-North Korean Relations. I divide the Sino-North Korean relationship into six periods and call attention to the turbulence and friction between the two countries during each period. After tracing the historical process of Sino-North Korean relations, I briefly analyze the foundation of the relationship as it evolved over time. Following an introduction to the North Korean nuclear issue, I examine the positions of countries participating in the six-party talks. Finally, I look at future prospects for Sino-North Korean relations. On a theoretical level, this thesis finds that Liberal and Constructivist theory satisfactorily describe the progression of Sino-North Korean relations before and after the cold war.
