Homogenization based Continuum Damage Models for Composites under Monotonic and Cyclic Loading

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Mechanical Engineering.
The objective of this dissertation is to develop a homogenization based continuum damage model for 3D fibre reinforced composites under monotonic and cyclic loading. The failure phenomenon considered in the model is debonding at the fiber matrix interface. The inter-facial debonding phenomenon is simulated by hysteretic bilinear cohesive zone model. A damage evolution surface is roposed in the strain space. The damage surface is in the principal damage coordinate system so as to account for non proportional loading histories. The damage surface has a fourth order tensor which characterizes the evolution of damage in the material. The fourth order tensor is expressed in terms of the invariants of the second order damage tensor. The second order damage tensor and other HCDM parameters are calibrated from the homogenized micromechanical solutions. A new parameter which characterices the accumulation of damage in each cycle is incorporated in the damage evolution surface for the cyclic loading. This parameter will be zero in the monotonic loading case. The results of the HCDM are compared with the homogenized micromechanics results. Finally the model is ncorporated into commercial finite element code and structural nalysis of macroscopic components are carried out.
