My M.F.A. thesis show entitled Some Reason to Believe was conceived and constructed to bear witness to my unshakable belief that objects can and do exist as gateways, or portals. These objects, when recognized as such, allow themselves to hover between their natural and base material existence and a higher level of existence. This dual nature is most commonly exemplified by the mythical notion of the Holy Grail, but, as contended by my show and this paper, all objects are subject to this dual nature. It is a lack of recognition that allows this true nature of all objects to be overlooked. My work strives to make apparent this duality.
What I have done is take physical, perceptual, and symbolic models and apply them to "common" materials. The model most prevalent in this show is that of the circuit. The general form or concept of the circuit takes specific referential form in the racetrack, the labyrinth, the celestial orbit, and the circumference. These specific symbolic forms are manifested within or through common or base materials such as asphalt, photocopies, thread, plywood, insulating foam, and others. Through this "transformation" of common materials, their dual nature is more easily recognizable.
