The Body in Print

Cameron, Erin Marie

Abstract Details

2012, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
This essay provides insight into the process and concepts behind my artwork, which was created for the 2012 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition, Next Wave, held at Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio. Briefly, my artwork aims to call into question standards of beauty present within our society as shown in various fashion and style related magazines. By utilizing the images found in these sources, I create paintings, drawings and prints, which set up alternate ideas about beauty - particularly related to the female form. I cut apart, reorganize and combine elements from these images in such a way that the original implications behind the advertisements are questioned and obscured. Within this essay, the importance of collage is discussed at length in regard to my own work, as well as the reasoning behind many stylistic decisions including color, composition, line, scale and medium. This essay represents a personal reflection on my artistic tendencies and ideas and is designed to further inform my practice.
