In this work, we summarize developments in the study of itinerant ferromagnetism that led to the current surge of interest in double perovskites and discuss recent experimental efforts that have been remarkably successful in producing and characterizing these compounds. We then present original theoretical calculations of the spin resolved spectral function and optical conductivity as a function of temperature and antisite (AS) disorder for the archetypal half-metallic double perovskite SFMO. We use exact diagonalization in combination with classical Monte Carlo to capture the dynamics of itinerant electrons coupled to thermally fluctuating local moments. Twisted boundary conditions are employed to minimize finite size effects. Our calculations of the spectral function show distinct signatures from thermal fluctuations and AS disorder that may be directly measured by ARPES experiments. We propose that such experiments could verify the half-metallic nature of SFMO as well as provide a probe of AS disorder. Thermal fluctuations and AS disorder produce a secondary peak in the optical spectrum, consistent with experiment. We demonstrate how this feature is correlated with the polarization of conduction electrons and the amount of disorder. Our calculations of the spin resolved conductivity show that the DC current remains largely spin polarized despite small amounts of AS disorder. Our results have important implications for spintronic applications.
