Concerns and Considerations for the Development and Administration of Arts Programs in Hospitals

Clem, Cassandra L

Abstract Details

, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Arts Policy and Administration.
Works of art have long been displayed in hospital corridors and patient rooms. In recent decades, art has been integrated into the hospital atmosphere in more significant ways. Many hospitals have developed art programs to manage the display of art, offering of art activities, and enhancement of the hospital environment through art. Arts administrators and hospital art program staff will benefit from examining these existing programs. This study relates three hospital art programs, each differing in care system type and stage of development, to two existing art models. An investigation of the development and administration of these art programs, with special attention given to the intent, selection and placement of art, staffing, program funding, and long-term care for art, provides specific examples of hospital art program and how they develop and function.
