Abstract
The Guttenberg Carbon Isotope Excursion (GICE) has been used in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario as a tool to improve chronostratigraphic correlation of the lower Trenton Group. The relationship of the GICE to the Deicke and Millbrig K-bentonites, and to the Phragmodus undatus, Plectodina tenuis, and Belodina confluens Conodont Zones, has also been studied. At Dexter, New York, the GICE begins just above the Millbrig (=Hounsfield) K- bentonite in the Selby Formation (Black River Group) and extends through the Napanee and Kings Falls Formations (Trenton Group). In the Roaring Brook section near Martinsburg, New York, there is maximum d13C value of +2.60‰ in the Napanee Formation, 1.8 m above the disconformity with the Watertown Limestone. Values decrease through the Kings Falls to baseline values in the Sugar River Formation. At Union Furnace, Pennsylvania, the GICE begins at the Millbrig K-bentonite in the Salona Formation and continues into the Coburn Formation reaching d13C values of +3.55‰, confirming earlier work (Patzkowsky et al., 1997). However, the Ph. undatus and Pl. tenuis Conodont Zones cannot be differentiated in New York or Pennsylvania because the interval is characterized by the Phragmodus-Amorphognathus deep water conodont biofacies. On Manitoulin Island, Ontario, the GICE reaches maximum d13C values of 2.4l‰ in the Bobcaygeon Formation (middle Simcoe Group). The excursion begins in the upper Ph. undatus Zone, extends through the Pl. tenuis Zone and baseline values are reached near the level of appearance of B. confluens. Differences in maximum d13C values reflect regional aquafacies. The GICE provides evidence in support of the recently defined Chatfieldian and Turinian stages as replacements of the poorly-defined Rocklandian, Kirkfieldian, Shermanian, and Blackriveran stages. In the older terminology, the GICE extends from Rocklandian through the Kirkfieldian. Based on the GICE and Millbrig K-bentonite, the Selby, the lower Bobcaygeon Formation, the Rodman Member of the Nealmont Formation, and lower Salona Formation are coeval. The entire Salona-Coburn interval is equivalent to the Selby-Napanee-Kings Falls interval. Based on conodont biostratigraphy and the GICE, the Nealmont, Salona, and Coburn Formations of Pennsylvania are older than previously recognized, but this study supports traditional correlations between New York and Ontario.
