Lake Gosiute formed in southwest Wyoming during the late Early Eocene and disappeared from Washakie Basin near the end of early Middle Eocene time. Paleocurrent directions were measured in the Cathedral Bluffs Tongue of the Wasatch Formation and Laney Member of the Green River Formation in order to determine from basin drainage patterns whether or not the Rock Springs uplift was elevated at that time. The trend of paleocurrent directions in arkosic Cathedral Bluffs sandstones is to the northwest, which suggests that nine sheet-like bodies of arkosic sands, silts, and muds that were deposited on the east side of the Bridger Basin area during the Wilkins Peak lake stage represent the distal edge of nine episodes of Cathedral Bluffs deposition. Volcaniclastic sandstones first appeared in the Washakie Basin area at the beginning of Middle Laney deposition; paleocurrent directions in them are oriented toward the southeast. This suggests that the change in volcaniclastic deposition—-from channel to blanket deposits—-that occurred at about the same time in the Bridger Basin area shifted streams southeastward into the Washakie Basin area. Dacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic material and siliceous vitric ash were largely altered to clinoptilolite-heulandite and montmorillonite by the saline-alkaline lake and playa-flat brines. The continued influx of debris filled in Lake Gosiute by the end of Laney deposition. The evidence indicates that the Washakie Basin-Bridger Basin region was an essentially flat plain, and that folding of the basins and the intervening Rock Springs uplift did not take place until after deposition of the Cathedral Bluffs Tongue and Laney Member.
