Same-Sex Parenting's Effect on Adolescent School Connectedness

This paper examines whether adolescents raised by homosexual parents are more socially isolated than teens raised by heterosexual parents. I compare teens raised by two, same-sex parents to adopted teens raised by two, opposite-sex parents on two dependent outcomes: adolescent school connectedness and popularity within their social networks. I argue that teens with same-sex parents are no more likely to suffer from social deficiencies than teens with opposite-sex parents. I propose that same-sex parents are more likely to be involved in their children's lives academically, and socially, to compensate for a heteronormative and homophobic society, and that this heightened involvement will have a positive effect on the two dependent variables. I also argue that adolescents of same-sex parents will be more open-minded and tolerant of diversity, which will help them thrive despite prejudiced attitudes in their school environment. I test these ideas using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and find support for my hypotheses. My findings provide a unique look at the lives of adolescents raised by same-sex parents that future research can build upon.
