Strange juice

Abstract Details

2002, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.

My current body of work is representative of how I respond to both internal and external stimuli. It is a statement of my energy and mood, imagination and dreams, reality and the surreal. These paintings are an outlet for the purging of my chaotic complexities. Their contained subtleties and oddities echo my own biomorphic science fiction fantasies. I often feel as though these kinetic images are instinctual prophecies. Through painting the strange environments that dominate me until balanced and comfortably finished, I bare my soul.

The act of making art carries with it a therapeutic release for me. It symbolizes a drug that cures the uncontrollable dis-ease of being human. I fantasize of colors mixing and playing together in ambiguous biodynamic spaces. These fantasies provoke and enchant me...keeping me healthy. When applied to canvas, the colors take on vivid, enticing forms which become animated through their implied motion and depth. In turn, this stimulates even more fantasies. Each painting is a visual poem offering a glimpse of my infinite insides and unfathomed b-sides.

My natural routine is methodical and spontaneous; impulsive but efficient. It frees my psyche of all the cluttered realities, troubled relations, and unwanted discomforts that ail me. This unrehearsed process allows me to explore all the possible choices in layers and life -- by chance. It is my way of making beautiful all of the unattractive realities embodied in health and disease; and making light of all of the burdens weighing our minds, physical persons, and our entire lives as we age. I am enamored with the ambiguity of not knowing what will drive us mad...or keep us sane in the end.

Baring my soul to the viewer by conveying my confusion and desire to become lost in the discovery of a new space is enjoyable to me in a most pleasing and alluring way --layering paint. It is my goal to taunt, entice, repel, and capture the viewer by that same allure. I hope the viewer will step away from the work with heightened energy, deeper thoughts and an overwhelming itch to create and contemplate.
