Abstract
Volunteers increasingly play a major role in academic hospitals’ missions to improve the patient experience, the educational opportunities, and research. Much of the research about hospital volunteers addresses adult volunteers rather than student volunteers. For student volunteers to receive the most out of the experience it is important to determine the outcome of the volunteer experience and the impact it has on them. Measuring the impact volunteering has on the college student will assist in improving their experiences by determining the training needs and assignments for these individuals. A volunteer questionnaire was created to determine how college aged student volunteers were impacted during their time at an academic medical center. The questionnaire was developed to gather data for the following capitals: human, social, physical and economic, and cultural. Students were also asked to describe their most rewarding, least rewarding, and most difficult experiences while volunteering. Volunteers report their sense that they are making a useful contribution to the community and their interest in volunteer work was impacted most during their time volunteering. Volunteers indicated that patient contact and an increase in components of capital were the most rewarding experiences during their time at the medical center. The volunteers reported that volunteering provides a very rewarding experience for college aged student volunteers.
