Abstract
The subject of this thesis is on the development and application of a discontinuous Galerkin-based wave prediction model, created in an effort to balance numerical accuracy and computational cost when simulating wind-driven waves in hydrodynamic domains. This model is based on a spectral approach and solves a relatively simple momentum balance equation in space and time where wave generation and degradation is solely the result of wind stress on the water surface. This is in contrast to most other spectral models which solve the wave action balance equation with multiple source terms over a (usually large) set of discrete frequency and direction components, making them prohibitively expensive from a computational standpoint. The DG wave model is validated in a series of hindcasts for Lake Erie and Lake Michigan where numerical output is found to be consistent with buoy recordings of significant wave height. The DG wave model is also compared with the well-established SWAN wave model in terms of accuracy and CPU time required for a monthly simulation; results from the model intercomparsion study reveal that the DG wave model is 33 times faster than SWAN with very similar results. As a final point, the discontinuous Galerkin method provides a robust framework for the model, rendering it an attractive option for future coupling in a multi-physics framework that incorporates coupling with circulation models and phase-resolving wave models for full-scale simulations in coastal regions.
