As conducting research over the internet becomes more common, researchers must continue to examine how some of the techniques used in more traditional methods, mail and telephone, apply to web-based data collection. This study examines the extent to which a lottery-type incentive, offered to the respondent without the requirement to participate will increase the response rate. The lottery incentive resulted in a slightly higher response rate; the difference, however, was not statistically significant. Nonetheless, the cost of the incentive, $100, is a relatively inexpensive price for an additional 36 completed questionnaires, which translates into an additional 72 questionnaires across the entire population. Moreover, the incentive appears to have had no negative effect on either the students who responded, that is, they did not differ demographically, nor on the quality of data.
