Uncommon Clay written and devised by Associate Professor Jeanine Thompson was a new work presented during the autumn quarter of 2001. The production tells the story of the French sculptress Camille Claudel: her life, her work, and her passions. We learn about the relationships Camille formed with her mentor and lover Auguste Rodin and others around her during her experiences in Paris. We also learn about the relationships and the dynamics that existed in Camille’s family with her brother Paul, and her mother Louise. Through the relationships and choices made by both Camille and others, the story of Camille’s life is revealed to the audience. We learn about the life of Camille through six actresses playing Camille throughout the progression of her life. The lighting design in this production served a dual purpose: the first to create the world in which the characters could inhabit, and the second to communicate the soul of Camille to the audience. The world in which the characters live includes a larger changeable stage space and two smaller unchanged spaces for Current Camille and Sculptor Camille Claudel to inhabit. The lighting of the piece was connected to the soul of Camille, the color and direction of the lighting changed to show the progression of her soul throughout the production.
