This thesis documents the pre-production, design and executuion processes for the lighting of The Caucasian Chalk Circle, directed by Mark Powers at The Ohio State University in January of 1988. The problem addressed was the lighting of the production according to the director’s concept, implementing the theories of Bertolt Brecht. A discussion of Brecht’s production philosophy as applicable to modern American theatre production practices, emphasizing lighting technology, culminates with a detailed account of the application of these theories to the OSU production. This account includes the process of director/design team concept development. The lighting design development and implementation are specifically addressed. Finally, the successes and failures of the lighting design in carrying out the concepts of the director and the theories of Brecht are analyzed from the designer’s viewpoint.
