Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare was a theatrical production presented during the autumn quarter of 2004 at The Ohio State University produced by the Department of Theatre in the Thurber Theatre. This thesis is a documentation of the process of the lighting design for Measure for Measure. The first chapters are a discussion of the pre-production elements of my research and collaboration with the design and production team. Subsequent chapters will describe the design aspects in terms of my approach to the concept and my analysis of the script, the technical aspects of working in Thurber and the successes and challenges therein, and finally my interactions with the electricians and the lighting crew and staff. Briefly, the director's production concept was to place Measure for Measure in the 'near future.' My approach was to create a world that was both cold and very mechanical. My research involved viewing films and finding images that fit this look. As Shakespearian plays often take place in multiple locations, this one encompassed a street near a whorehouse, a palace turned apartment, a jail, a monastery, and a nunnery. A few of the locations were indicated scenically, while others were lit distinctly to act as a completely different location. To accomplish all requirements, I incorporated a wide range of lighting resources to create these distinctive locations.
