Magnetic Mapping of Vertically Offset Deep Basement Faults and Evidence of Tectonic Control over Surface Topography in Northwestern and Western Ohio

Although there have been many earthquakes in western Ohio, and some faults have been mapped on a large scale, many faults have not been mapped in detail or at all. Limitations of surface mapping in a glaciated area with extensive urban and agricultural development mean that many faults are only identifiable by geophysical methods. This study uses surveys of gravity and geomagnetic fields, to define previously unidentified fault zones in crystalline basement rocks in northwest and west-central Ohio, attempts to define basic cross cutting relationships between sets of faults, and to compares the trends of fault zones to topographic surface features and earthquake locations. This study also indicates that there are two directions of faulting in the study area, and in northwest Ohio there is some relationship between faults and surface features, suggesting that there is a previously unrecognized tectonic control over surface topography.
