The relationship between values of muscularity, drive for muscularity, and gender roles: an examination of male body image

This study examined the relationship between muscularity and gender roles. Several scholars have suggested that body image is an increasingly relevant issue for men. Muscularity has been identified as one component most salient to men. Past literature has also found that gender roles constructs can moderate body image expression. In this study, 141 male participants took the Swansea Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire, Bem Sex Roles Inventory, and the Perceived Somatotype scale, and a demographics questionnaire. It was hypothesized that values of muscularity and drive for muscularity would be related to an instrumental gender role. ANOVA and correlational analysis failed to support this hypothesis. A small relation was found between expressiveness and valuing muscularity. Further analysis revealed that an individual’s self-perception of being muscular was related to valuing muscularity, and ideal perception was related to seeking and valuing muscularity. These results overall suggest that gender roles constructs are not relevant factors for muscularity. Results also suggest that the way individuals perceive themselves and their ideal body is related to how salient muscularity is to them as a component of body image. Other potentially relevant variables for future examination are discussed in conclusion.
