This thesis documents how I came to change some of my fundamental assumptions about teaching and learning in my drama classroom through refractive practitioner analysis of an action research project dealing with classroom community. I began the action research project in the winter of 2002 because my drama classroom was sometimes lacking the key aspects of classroom community, cooperation and teamwork. Throughout the process of action research I made very little headway in solving my problem. After the completion of my action research project I began to examine it to determine why it had been unsuccessful. Through this examination of my previous actions and reflections I was engaging in refractive practitioner research. Through the analysis of my action research project I was finally able to get to the root of my classroom community concerns. I began to uncover and understand the discourses or internalized socio-cultural beliefs that influenced my choices as a drama teacher. This thesis examines how I uncovered my discourses about classroom community in the drama classroom and how I was able to redefine my classroom community discourses finally solving my classroom community concerns.
