In 1914 Franklin County suffragists waged an intensive initiative and referenda campaign to persuade male voters of the equity of extending the ballot to women. In this effort they failed. This thesis is an examination of their failure at a pivotal time in the national suffrage campaign. This thesis presents a two part argument. First, I assert that Franklin County suffragists tried to use their social capital to entice male voters to support their cause. Thus, their failure suggests that they did not have either enough or the right type of influence to be persuasive to a critical amount of voters. To tease out the social capital of suffragists in Columbus I explore the demographic composition of suffrage volunteers who gathered the necessary signatures to get woman suffrage on the ballot. Second, I contend that suffragists had a difficult time framing their issue because the press and political parties dismissed suffrage as an urgent issue and because suffrage was negatively associated in the minds of voters with British militancy and prohibition. Furthermore, I explore how conflicts about strategy between the local, state, and national suffrage organizations undermined the ability of Columbus suffragists to successfully wage their campaign for the ballot.
