Abstract Details

2003, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, EDU Teaching and Learning.
This study investigated the effects of a word box intervention on phonemic segmentation, letter naming fluency, and word recognition with 4 kindergarten students identified as “at-risk” in a general education class. The word box approach was specifically designed to directly teach phonemic segmentation. Results showed that each student increased in their phonemic segmentation and word recognition scores from baseline to intervention sessions. As the number of intervention sessions increased, children’s ability to correctly identify phonemes in words increased as well as their ability to correctly recognize words presented. Letter naming scores, however, did not produce the same distinctive. Although fluency scores increased, students’ fluency scores were variable throughout the duration of intervention sessions. Children’s letter naming fluency skills did not seem to improve dramatically as a result of the word box instruction. Maintenance scores were also high for the students receiving phonemic segmentation and word recognition probes. Letter naming fluency scores were variable although showed a generally increasing trend. Implications and suggestions for future research are noted.
