Comparing the Effects of Differential Reinforcement Procedures and Sensory Integration on the In-Seat Behavior and Work Completion of Middle School Students with Disabilities

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, EDU Teaching and Learning.
The relative effectiveness of differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), differential reinforcement of high rates of responding (DRH), and using ball seating on the in-seat behavior and work completion was examined across 3 middle school students with moderate special educational needs. DRO procedures were used to target in-seat behavior. DRH procedures were used to target work completion when it was clear that neither the ball seating nor the DRO condition increased work completion. One participant received treatment in 5 phases: baseline, alternating treatments, DRO, ball seating, and DRH. The other 2 participants received treatment in 4 phases: differential reinforcement, ball seating, differential reinforcement. DRO was effective in increasing in-seat behavior for both participants with whom it was implemented. With 1 of those participants, DRO was more effective than the ball seating condition in increasing in-seat behavior. DRO was effective in increasing work completion for 1 of the 2 participants with whom it was implemented. DRH was effective in maintaining high levels of in-seat behavior and gradually increasing levels of work completion for both participants with whom it was implemented. The ball seating was not effective in increasing work completion for any of the participants, but maintained high levels of in-seat behavior for 2 of the 3 participants. Results are discussed in terms of classroom implications and future research.
