Abstract Details

2001, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Allied Medical Professions.
This study examined the effects on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of eighth grade students after participation in a sexual health education program taught in school as part of the family and consumer science requirement. The education program used for instruction was called Focus on Youth. This program was based on the Focus on Kids curriculum. The Focus on Kids program was developed and has been identified as a program that works to reduce health risk behaviors among youth by the Centers for Disease Control Division of Adolescent and School Health. The modifications included the curriculum being taught in a school -based setting, a more comprehensive curriculum including all Sexually Transmitted Diseases, sexual violence, unwanted pregnancies, as well as HIV prevention. The experimental subjects were randomly assigned eighth grade students in two family and consumer science classes taught in a large urban middle school. The control subjects were students randomly assigned to a unified arts class taught at the same time as the Family and Consumer Science course. Instruction was given to the experimental students five days a week, for three weeks in 40 minute periods. Results for the study concluded there was significant positive change across time for knowledge and a significant positive change for the group in knowledge; however, the intervention produced no significant interaction effect for time and group in the areas of knowledge, attitudes, or behaviors.
