Abstract
Private water systems in Ohio vary greatly based on Ohio's diverse geology and differences in water treatment. Regions particularly susceptible to water contamination include areas of karst geology, abandoned underground mines, and drift thickness less than 20 feet. Campylobacteriosis, a leading cause of gastroenteritis in developed countries, is prevalent throughout Ohio. The regional risk can be assessed by modeling the campylobacteriosis incidence in each geological region. Parameters are estimated first with the susceptible-infectious and susceptible-infectious-recovered models of ordinary differential equations with added water (W) compartments: the SIWS and SIWR models, respectively. The preliminary parameter estimation demonstrates that the SIWS model is not supported by the data, and the SIWR model is supported by the data. The SIWR model was used to fit disease data from the state of Ohio and the three geological regions of interest. Parametrization of the SIWR model shows that the basic reproduction number tends to be larger in regions of karst geology. Other parameters, such as the effective population size, appear to be identifiable. Regions of karst geology and regions of shallow drift have some evidence of being more susceptible to campylobacteriosis than the state at large. More research would be useful to expand this finding to other diseases.
