A rectilinear space of indeterminate size. A multitude of structures reside here: backdrops and facades, freestanding, wall mounted, hung and floating. Portals, cut-outs intentionally made or pre-existing within the materials allow us to see through to forms beyond. A screenplay hangs from a chain. The forms observed exist in an inter-state looking on the brink of collapse. It is against this backdrop that a cacophony of noise and live performance takes place. At the centre of the above description lies gala, a chaotic narrative reimagining of a working class corner of Northern England. A sprawling work that unfolds through painting, set, sound, moving image, and performance. In the writing to follow I analyse key influences in the production of this work, and examine four previous artworks of my own: /~~~~/, Rhinoplasty for the Unemployed, Peterlee, a place for industry, and Untitled 2016. These works were instrumental in my thinking and development of how disparate media might intersect to construct narrative. The work outlined is woven amidst thoughts on the post-war British New Town, regional and personal history, youth culture, and technical strategies. Lastly I look to the future and how these techniques and ways of making might be pushed further and find form in as yet unrealised work.
