Descriptive Analysis of Livestock Projects Impact on Youth Development of Knowledge and Leadership Life Skills

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Education, Ohio State University, Agricultural and Extension Education.
This descriptive study focused on the impact livestock projects have on youth’s development of knowledge and leadership life skills. Based upon youth’s livestock project experiences, this study aimed to describe the benefits youth have received. Currently, minimal data has been reported to examine how youth’s involvement in livestock projects and their experiences impact knowledge and development. Results from the analysis of 2014-2016 Ohio State Fair Skillathon score sheets and the livestock project impact survey, provides data and content area focus for 4-H, FFA, Extension Professionals, and Agriscience Educators to enhance youth’s development opportunities. Analysis revealed that youth’s perception of knowledge is generally favorable surrounding: animal welfare and care, genetics, handling and equipment, meat science, nutrition, and reproduction. With improvements needed to be made in anatomy and physiology. Over the three-year trend, Skillathon scores have continued to increase with approximately 80% of individuals competing in the event representing the 4-H organization. Utilizing the findings identified in the study may result in improvements in youth knowledge development, by helping to focus the education being provided to Ohio’s youth involved in livestock projects. Continued research can be utilized to identify specific factors contributing to youth’s experiences and the life skills and knowledge developed.
