Abstract
This thesis introduces a battery management station designed for Soliton motion capture system. This station integrates Lithium Ion Polymer battery charging and gauging system and can work with up to four Solitons at the same time. Using the onboard charger of the station, Soliton batteries can be charged from empty to full in about 72 minutes giving an average runtime of 8.5 hours on Solitons. The station also provides accurate report on each battery’s level of charge using Texas Instruments Impedance TrackTM battery fuel gauge ICs, which send battery data to the station’s microcontroller using I2C protocol. When connected to power supply through USB, up to four Solitons can be charged simultaneously with individual gauging, which provides users with the option of partially charge the battery. When an USB connection is missing, the station can serve as a portable gauging solution, in which case users insert a Soliton to the station and get the battery’s level of charge from onboard LED indication. The battery management station provides compatible connectivity interfaces with commercial battery management tools purchased from Texas Instruments. For future development, the design of the station is equipped with a PC interface which allows serial communication between the station and a PC client over USB connection.
