The Comparative Effects of Interspersal Drill and Cover-Copy-Compare on the Math Performance of Students with Autism

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Educational Studies.
The purpose of this study was to examine the comparative effects of oral interspersal drill (O-ID) and oral cover-copy-compare (O-CCC) on the math performance of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two students diagnosed with ASD participated in this study, one of them was an 11-year-old male, and the other one was a 15-year-old female. The experiment consisted of four phases, which included O-ID followed by O-CCC (Phase 1), O-CCC followed by O-ID (Phase 2), O-CCC followed by O-ID with different problem sets (Phase 3), and alternating the order of O-CCC and O-ID with different problem sets (Phase 4). The results indicated that participants had higher rates of correct responses in the O-CCC condition than in the O-ID condition in all four phases of the study. The mean number of correct responses was higher in O-CCC condition than in O-ID condition. Additionally, based on the data in maintenance, it was hard to tell which instructional condition was better in helping participants maintain math facts that they have learned in the O-ID and O-CCC conditions. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that O-CCC was more efficient than O-ID in promoting participants’ generalization of the math facts. According to the data of social validity, participants were more likely to learn and practice math facts with O-CCC than with O-ID. In conclusion, O-CCC was more efficient and more effective than O-ID on multiplication facts learning with the participants in this study.
