Abstract
Objective: The purposes of this study were to: 1) assess the role of dental attractiveness on overall facial attractiveness and 2) evaluate how facial and dental attractiveness of models influence raters’ opinions of their integrity, social and intellectual attractiveness. Methods: Male and female facial images rated by peers as unattractive, average, and attractive were combined with oral images of 4 different levels of dental attractiveness (IOTN 1, 5, 7, and 10). Following a power analysis, 67 participants meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited. Raters viewed closed-lip smile and open-lip, posed smile of 24 models and rated them on overall attractiveness and multiple social/ intellectual attractiveness dimensions using a 100mm VAS method. Results: Intra- rater reliability was fair to excellent for both aims. For Aim 1, significant interactions (p<0.005) were observed with ANOVA for facial attractiveness and dental attractiveness. It was determined that the contribution of the oral structures to overall attractiveness is not fixed or linear rather it was dependent on malocclusion level, facial attractiveness, and model sex. For both sexes, dental impact on overall attractiveness is neutral or negative when teeth are less than ideal beginning at IOTN 5 for all background attractiveness levels. The impact of dental attractiveness on social, integrity, and intellectual attractiveness was also dependent on malocclusion level, facial attractiveness, and model sex. For specific integrity, social and intellectual attractiveness judgments, dental attractiveness can make dramatic differences and these can be more consistent for men. Conclusions: The contribution of the teeth and smile to overall attractiveness and integrity, social and intellectual attractiveness was not fixed or linear. The effect was dependent on the level of malocclusion, background facial attractiveness, and model sex.
