There is a dearth of information on the knowledge and perceptions of highly educated adults regarding the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). In order to describe the knowledge and perceptions of adults with a postgraduate education regarding the recommendations of MyPlate and the DGA, we conducted a qualitative study. Focus group discussions based on the social cognitive theory were utilized. Data from focus group were recorded, transcribed verbatim, coded and collated, and themes were identified. Five themes emerged from the focus group discussions: 1) difficulty in following recommendations of the DGA and MyPlate; 2) awareness, but lacking knowledge concerning the DGA and MyPlate; 3) need for specific information within MyPlate; 4) barriers and facilitators to following the DGA and MyPlate; 5) high self-efficacy, low willingness to follow the DGA and MyPlate. Our findings show that regardless of socioeconomic status (SES), individuals experience difficulty adhering to the recommendations of the DGA. Work needs to be done to increase knowledge of the DGA. There is a need for clear and specific nutrition information regarding MyPlate and the DGA. Future iterations of MyPlate should consider diverse needs of consumers.
