Cluster Analysis of Reaction Time for Children in 5-12 Year Age Groups

Fire related accidents are one of the leading causes of death in children aged 1 to 14, in fact children are not awakened by fire alarms. Sleep inertia is a found to play a significant role in diminishing attentiveness in such catastrophic events. A research study was conducted at Nationwide Children's Hospital to test the ability of fire alarms to awaken children and to measure their impairment, or sleep inertia, upon being awakened. In this thesis we use cluster analysis to further investigate the results from these tests. It was found that the younger patients (5 to 6 year old and 7 to 8 year old age groups) clustered in two groups, a vulnerable group of patients and a resilient group. As we continued our data and clusters began to change. In the 9 to 10 age group we begin to see a third group of patients clustering in the middle. In the final age group we are able to see three distinct clusters, a vulnerable group, a resilient group, and a group with average reaction times that falls in between. Similar clusters have been described for adults with sleep deprivation.
