Using Molecular Baskets as Secondary Coordination Ligands for Tuning the Recognition of Phosphate in Water

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Chemistry.
The investigation of molecular hosts acting as secondary coordination sphere for tuning the action of metallic complexes has been of interest for obtaining more effective catalysts or chemosensors. In this thesis, I describe the capability of molecular baskets to trap tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA)-Zn2+ and give a nesting complex in which the basket scaffold surrounds the chelate. Inorganic phosphates are coordinated to the zinc cation, however, the formation of the nesting complex is followed with the full release of such phosphate to bulk solvent. We used 1H NMR spectroscopy to study various equilibria in solution and suggest the mechanism by which the release of coordinated phosphates takes place. We reason that controlling the coordination of phosphates with external input could be used in directing their reactivity (systems biology) and for drug delivery applications (phosphorylated drugs and proteins).
