Productive Struggle: How Struggle in Mathematics can Impact Teaching and Learning

Mathematics education scholars have described perseverance and creative thinking through rich tasks as an essential element in developing deeper understanding of mathematics. The constant of productive struggle has been coined to highlight the importance of sense-making in the process. In this paper, we discuss the connection between problem solving and productive struggle. We give a definition of productive struggle and provide a description of instructional factors that tent to nurture the student's disposition for developing student mindset towards perseverance through struggle. We describe potential benefits from engaging in productive struggle and provide activities that have the potential to support productive struggle.
