Towards Sustainable Mobility: the Impacts of Infrastructure Change, Technological Innovation, and Demographic Shift

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, City and Regional Planning.
This research quantitatively examines whether the current social and economic transformations may speed up the realization of a sustainable mobility future in the United States. Using multiple comprehensive travel survey datasets, this research focuses on the impacts of three major societal trends: infrastructure change, technological innovation, and demographic shift. The findings of the three essays suggest that although today’s young adults do drive much less than previous generations, more planning efforts are still needed to promote active travel and encourage ridesharing. The results imply that American car culture is gradually changing, and adequate policy provisions and infrastructure investments may effectively speed up such a trend. Understanding the impacts of societal trends on sustainable transport mode choices creates opportunities for policymakers and professionals to prioritize the limited resources with respect to future mobility patterns proactively.
