Adults with developmental disabilities (DD) are at risk for high rates of challenging behavior, which can limit their ability to participate in the community. Limitations on participation has the potential to negatively impact quality of life. The approach to treatment of challenging behaviors (CB) with the strongest evidence base is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). When ABA-based support plans are implemented successfully, adults with DD experience positive outcomes including increased quality of life. The implementation of ABA in community-based settings may be compromised by uncontrollable variables that limit its effectiveness. The current research study was a program evaluation of a community-based program that addresses CB in adults with DD, examined through the lens of implementation science. This study used quantitative methodology to indicate the importance of the implementation of behavior plans to fidelity in order to successfully decrease challenging behaviors. This study used qualitative methodology to identify barriers to implementation which existed from the participant level through the program level. Qualitative analyses also shed light on the positive and negative quality of life changes that occur when behaviors plans are implemented in community-based settings. Finally, recommendations are made to advance the science and practice of community-based behavior support.
