Death Salon

Schumaker, Robert J, Jr

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, English.
Death Salon is a collection of poems that considers our connection to death and dying. In its invocation of the departed, it queers death, transforming grief into a literary salon through which the dead are interviewed and remembered. This is a collection with death at its center, offering a long meditation on the ways that we are living and dying. It imagines queer afterlives, such as in one poem, “Wishing I Were Barbie,” in which the speaker re-imagines his inevitable absence as sparkling fullness, with all the glamor of Malibu Barbie. The poems contemplate the ways in which we carry our grief: do we close ourselves off to it, or do we dare to look at the thing that scares us?
