Pandemonium and Succession

Holden, Maxwell L

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
At face value, the work is relatively straightforward to approach; handbuilt ceramic pots, some with sculptural lids, all with rich illustrative surfaces. The forms lean on historic vessels from several thousand years ago to as recently as the last century and stretch at least three continents in geographic origins from French Art Nouveau to neolithic China. Complexity arises where the surface drawings bridging personal experience and narratives rooted in the research from religious studies and folklore. Together these elements contend formal and conceptual notions in fine arts by bending genre and expectation. I challenge assumptions used to navigate life, and uncover the building blocks of meaning making by creating both readable and illegible narrative.
