Production and perception of vowel duration in regional varieties of Mexican Spanish

This thesis presents results from two production studies and one perceptual study looking at regional vowel duration in central and southern Mexico. Central Mexican Spanish has long been documented as showing multiple vowel weakening processes that include shorter or deleted vowels. Spanish outside of central Mexico, including the south, is undocumented for these processes. Data from the present study show that the two regions differ significantly in the duration of their final vowels. There are also significant gender differences in final vowel production. As a group, men produce longer vowels than women, but central and southern men and women are doing different things. Social evaluations obtained from a verbal guise perceptual experiment show that vowel duration variability is a significant predictor for listeners ratings. The longer the final vowel of the speaker, the more likely a listener is to rate them as more materially successful and simultaneously less cowboy-like. Findings contribute to an expanded understanding of Mexican vowels with data from multiple regions, acoustic measures and statistical analysis. Findings also contribute to the conversations about duration and stress outside of Spanish; as well as adding to understandings of Mexican regional variation and social perceptions of that variation.
