Learning Centered Teaching – One Learner’s Experience and Perspective

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, East Asian Languages and Literatures.
Compared with what takes place in China, Learning-centered Teaching is more popular in Europe and the United States and have achieved rich results in both research and practice. Moreover, in the field of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL), Learning-centered Teaching is still in the early stage of development and application. Through a “thick description” of the author’s personal experiences in Chinese learning, study abroad in China, and teaching Chinese in US K-12 system, this thesis argues that “learning as the center” is essential for cultivating learners' sustained learning ability, and it also explores the guiding and enlightening roles of teachers. This assumption coincides with the Performed Culture Approach (PCA) practiced by OSU Chinese program. Through my Chinese learning and teaching experiences, it is strongly argued that "learning-centered" not only is different from "teaching-centered" or “teacher-centered,” but also different from “student-centered.” “Learning as the center" is worthy of further exploration and promotion
