Finite Difference Time Domain Modelling of Ultrasonic Parametric Arrays in Two-Dimensional Spaces

This research investigates the behavior of sound field projected from ultrasonic parametric arrays deployed in practical environments. This not only entails studying their interaction with arbitrary shaped geometric configurations in realistic sized domains but also with materials possessing various acoustic absorption levels and reflective properties. A two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) modelling approach is presented to accurately model the physics of nonlinear acoustics wave propagation. Modelling of general angled and curved boundaries is achieved using the staircase boundary approximation strategy. Furthermore, impedance boundary conditions for the governing equations are proposed and implemented. Comparison of the simulation results with the analytical solution indicate the effectiveness of the modelling approach. Finally, as an application of the model, an ultrasonic parametric array is modelled. The sound propagation and reflection from impedance walls is studied with the developed model. The findings from this research will facilitate the use of airborne parametric arrays in numerous audio and speech applications including active noise control and directional audio generation.
